Marg's Rose Cake
My sister-in-law is having a surprise dinner party for her Mum who is turning 70. She wanted something floral (I don't normally 'do' flowers as I am not talented in that area!). As this was to feed only 12 people I was quite limited in the design as I didn't want too much left over cake. As it was going to be the centerpiece of the table I wanted it to be fresh and striking. My sister-in-law is setting the table in black and silver so I think this will go well in the middle.
I am really pleased how this turned out. As I only make cakes for my family & close friends I just want to add a wee note....
To any family members who are thinking of requesting this cake..... think again... this is a one off.... never again type of deal!
The stripes alone took me 5 and a half (non-stop) hours. I can't even imagine the hours in the roses.... but lets just say there are about 70 roses on the top.... each rose has 15 petals..... each petal is individually frilled and curled and then applied...... THAT IS 1050 PETALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went through a very similar type of feeling when I last did a half marathon.... it was like there was just no end.
:O)

Wow! This is simply stunning! You did a fantastic job...and you are very talented at making the roses -they look amazing! I've just been taught how to make sugar roses and they are so time consuming...you must have a lot of patience lovie!!
Wow! What an amazing cake! The stripes and flowers are just gorgeous.

Oh my - i understand how you feel, but you sure have a pretty job well done to be proud of!!
I wanted to say one word only" gorgeous!" but somebody already did :-) .
I am speechless....beautiful
This is wonderful, really beautiful, well done.
That's a beaut! I don't blame you for putting the disclaimer on it, that it's a one of a kind!
Can I ask you how you got your fondant to come out of your jem alpha cutters? I can't seem to get my fondant out of mine!
Thanks! *S
You are real genius,Kathryn. Do you have your own shop in Auckland?I live on the shore.
Thank you
No I don't have a shop... I don't sell my cakes or take orders. It is simply a hobby for me.
Shawna: I use gumpaste (fondant mixed with cmc/tylose) when I use the cutters. HTH
this is absolutely gorgeous!!
I can only dream of making it to your level some day!
Vanessa
I love all your work. How I wish I could be like you.Very very talented.
A gourgous cake! I like flower cakes and on the contrary to you I prefer making flower cakes. But I use the silicone moulds to make the flowers...I'm cheating a bit because I can't do what you do.
Absolutely fantastic - so neat! I am not suprised the stripes took so long - I bet everyone loved it though! Hx
Wow...that cake is so beautiful...what wonderful work you did! Just great>
Stay Baking, Carrie
Thank you so much for your lovely comments :O)
lol @ your warning to family and friends at the end! This cake looks absolutely stunning (and flowers aren't your thing?!)
I love it, The colours are amazing, beautiful. Well done
You are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!
This cake is a work of art...I couldn't believe when you said you're a self-taught amateur, it doesn't show in your work...It's very professional looking...That should cost atleast thousands of dollars if you order from a cake shop...What a hobby! You might wanna take it to the next level :)
Love your cakes! Cake decorating is so fun!
I'm sorry, I was looking at this cake and loving it...I copied a picture and posted it on cakecentral in the forums to ask a question about the how you achieve a domed top....I did not see your disclaimer on top about needing consent for your images...I apologize, I'm working on deleting it.
Sandi Oh - that's okay :O) It is really meant for the people who decide to just take my photos and put them on their websites as their own. I also have most of my photos licensed with Getty Images so my contract with them prevents people being able to use them at all.
I really appreciate you taking the time to comment though :O)
I LOVE this cake!! And New Zealand :). I wanted to ask what size cake you used?
But your cake is so beautiful & stunning! All the hardwork is well worth it! :)
